Your tour takes in the historic Iera Moni Agias Anastasias Greek Monastery, dating back to the reign of Queen Theophano in AD 888. It was re-founded by Holy Mountain monk and Archbishop of Thessaloniki St Theonas around AD 1525, who became the Abbot and transformed it into a flourishing monastery for hundreds of monks. Today it displays treasures from the times of each of its founders.
Start the picturesque ascent of Mount Cholomontas in central Chalkidiki to the traditional Greek village of Palaiokastro 560 kilometres from ground level. Then climb to Taxiarchis, 670 kilometres up and blessed with clear, dark skies, perfect for observing the deep night skies. The region is decorated with magnificent forest scenery and is also famous for its vast fir ‘Christmas’ tree plantations.
