Welcome to the official page of the OPTICON observing school and Awareness conference Rozhen NAO Observatory, Sept. 17-24, and Sofia 25 September-2 October. Here you can find regular updates about the program and the organization. The 2014 Observing School will take place in Bulgaria.
All participants in the OBSERVING SCHOOL are expected to arrive in Sofia on September 16th.
and will leave for the observatory on 17 September! Transport for the school participants will be provided. If you are participating in the OPTICON Awareness conference ONLY the suggested arrival date is September 24th. Conference accommodation partner is Hemus Hotel. Observations will take place at the Rozhen Observatory in the period 17-24 September, leaving Sofia on 17 September.

The international Starmus Festival, organized by the Government of the Canary Islands and Tenerife Cabildo and directed by astrophysicist and researcher at the Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias (IAC), Garik Israelian, will feature internationally acclaimed British physicist and cosmologist, Stephen Hawking.
The international event will be held from 22-27 September 2014 and is a unique opportunity for promoting the island abroad both from a scientific and tourism standpoint. The Festival also has the support of the Cabildo de La Palma, the International Astronomical Union and the IAC.
The Starmus Festival is open to everyone young and old, beginners, amateurs and professionals. Anyone who holds a passion for astronomy, science, the arts and music, and who has a desire to know more about where we came from and what’s out there.
Activities at Starmus are not just limited to the four days of talks. There will also be a Teide “Star Party”, gala dinner, cocktail reception, space legends tribute, a roundtable discussion in the GTC telescope, Sonic Universe contest and tours to visit the observatories in Tenerife and La Palma. Attendees will have plenty of opportunity to mingle freely with the scientists, artists and rock stars, and casually talk over the Universe and what it all means.

Observation of partial solar eclipse, Friday, March 20
On Friday, March 20 we will have the opportunity to observe the first solar eclipse of 2015.
The eclipse will be total points of the north Atlantic and only partial in other regions including Europe, northern Africa and western Asia.
The eclipse will be visible as a partial throughout Greece. In Thessaloniki will start at 10:39:44 with the Sun at a height of 41.4 degrees. The maximum partial eclipse happens at 11:45:50, where the Moon covers 38% of the solar disk with the Sun at 48 degrees altitude. The phenomenon ends at 12:53:58.
Members of Friends of Astronomy Group will sell their telescopes so that the public can observe safely striking phenomenon.
